I'm thrilled to be celebrating our graduates with you at our 2026 Spring Commencement! We are recognizing over 25,000 graduates this spring. Congratulations to all of you!
It took a great deal of commitment and perseverance to reach this milestone, and I hope you take a moment to reflect with pride on your accomplishment.
As a first-generation college graduate, I understand the importance of lifelong learning and how earning your college degree can unlock opportunities for ourselves, our families and our communities. I'm sure you have many exciting accomplishments ahead of you.
I also want to thank the families and friends celebrating our graduates with us. Your encouragement and support helped make this celebration possible.
Enjoy your celebration, and congratulations to the Class of 2026!

A procession of the various participants begins and ends our formal commencement ceremony. Individuals are arranged to reflect the order of academic rank in the hierarchy of the traditional European university.
At Southern New Hampshire University, the ceremony begins with ceremonial bagpipes, followed by the Mace Bearer leading the procession. He or she is followed by the Faculty Marshals, the Platform Party, and then the Faculty of the schools.

Stemming from the Latin word mateola, meaning mallet or staff, the mace was used in ancient societies as a tool or a weapon. It consisted of a long handle with a ball of steel or brass at one end. Over time, its original function became obsolete and the mace evolved into a symbol of authority. Universities in Europe with roots in the Middle Ages adopted the mace to represent tradition and unity. Since then, other institutions of higher learning have come to use the mace in their ceremonies.
Southern New Hampshire University commissioned David Elwell, a New Hampshire silversmith, to create a mace to commemorate the university's 50th anniversary commencement. This mace is made of brass, aluminum, copper, and bronze, with a staff of ebony and African padauk.

The Presidential Medallion, worn by the president with academic regalia, is a symbolic representation of the authority and responsibility vested by the university in the president. It is a symbol of office that dates from medieval times and is worn by the president at all ceremonial occasions.
The Presidential Medallion is a permanent possession of the university and is presented to successive presidents at their inaugurations by the chair of the Board of Trustees. The chain and medallion are fabricated from sterling silver. The university emblem, in relief, is the central design on the medallion. It is surrounded by a border of entwined wires, similar in texture to the chain links, and finished with a square raised edge. The heavy, twisted links of the chain bear four oval plates on each side. The background of the entire piece is oxidized to highlight the relief design and textures. The names of those who have held the office are engraved on the reverse side of the medallion.
The Presidential Medallion was designed and fabricated in 1987 by award-winning New Hampshire metalsmith Jacquelyn Ferrency of Milford.
Academic regalia — cap, gown, and hood — varies by degree level and institution. The colors worn today represent the disciplines and universities from which our faculty and graduates have earned their degrees. The length of hoods varies with the degree. Academic hood colors represent the field of study through velvet trim, while inner satin lining shows institution colors.

Southern New Hampshire University has traditionally recognized outstanding teaching across its many degree programs. Following an objective review process, a full-time faculty member and an adjunct faculty member are honored with the annual Excellence in Teaching Award. The process is student-driven, with all nominations coming from the student body. A committee of faculty, staff, and administrators uses the nomination information and the following criteria to select the winners: demonstrating a commitment to supporting students beyond what might be expected; exhibiting a positive general attitude towards students that demonstrates concern for their welfare; and engaging students proactively, consistently, and authentically to foster academic growth and progress.
Southern New Hampshire University recognizes the exemplary efforts of our adjunct faculty in promoting teaching and learning within its online programs. After an extensive review of student feedback and academic evaluations, nominations are submitted by Associate Deans of Faculty within their curricular units. Out of almost 10,000 faculty teaching online with us this year, only one instructor from each of the curricular units is honored with this achievement.
Recipients of this award have been teaching with SNHU for less than a year and show an unwavering commitment to quality instruction and an exceptional student experience. They support students by acknowledging their prior learning and experience, engage students proactively and authentically to foster academic growth, and utilize expertise in their discipline to create connections between course content and current developments in their field.
The Excellence in Student Support Award recognizes staff members for making an outstanding impact on the students they serve. These SNHU staff members demonstrate a strong interest in student growth, education, and unity. They serve as advocates for student issues and show a commitment to student well-being, seeing each student as unique. These awards are student-driven, with all nominations coming from the student body.
